Overview

Tantra does not track email opens, and this is a deliberate design choice. Most tools measure opens by embedding an invisible image, called a tracking pixel, in every email. Tantra never inserts one. Instead, Tantra measures real engagement through clicks, replies, and unsubscribes. This article explains the reasoning so you can trust the numbers you do see.

Why open tracking is left out

Open tracking sounds useful, but the way it works undermines the very outcome cold email needs, which is landing in the inbox.

  • Tracking pixels hurt deliverability. Spam filters recognize the hidden image that open trackers rely on. A remote image loaded from a tracking host is one of the signals filters use to sort promotional mail away from the inbox. Leaving the pixel out helps your mail read as a personal note.
  • Open numbers are unreliable. Many mail clients now pre-load images through privacy proxies. That records an open whether or not a human ever read the message, so the open rate is inflated and often meaningless.
  • A pixel makes your mail look like a marketing blast. Cold outreach works best when it reads as one person writing to another. A hidden tracker is exactly what a hand-typed message would not contain.
  • It respects the recipient. A pixel silently reports back the moment an email is viewed. Skipping it is a more honest relationship with the people you contact.

Taken together, an open rate would cost you deliverability while giving you a number you cannot trust. Tantra chooses stronger signals instead.

What Tantra measures instead

Tantra records three engagement signals, and every one reflects a real recipient action.

  • Clicks. A recipient who clicks a tracked link showed clear interest. Tantra filters out automated clicks from security scanners so your click rate reflects people. See how click tracking works.
  • Replies. A reply is the strongest signal in cold email. Tantra detects replies and classifies their intent so you can act on them quickly.
  • Unsubscribes. An opt-out tells you a recipient is not a fit, which keeps your list clean and your reputation healthy.

Because these are actions rather than a background pixel load, they tell you what recipients actually did, not merely that a mail client fetched an image.

What this means in your analytics

Your email analytics show sent volume, unique clicks and click-through rate, replies and reply rate, bounces, and unsubscribes. There is no opens tile, on purpose. Read a campaign through the signals that count, clicks and replies together, rather than an open rate that would mislead you.

Best practices

  • Judge a campaign on reply rate first, then click rate. Those reflect genuine interest.
  • Write one clear call to action so a click is easy to interpret.
  • Keep your sender domains healthy so more of your mail reaches the inbox in the first place. See domain health reports.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for an open rate. Tantra does not report one, by design. Use clicks and replies instead.
  • Reading a low click rate as failure. Some recipients reply without ever clicking a link.
  • Adding a third-party open pixel through a template. It would work against your deliverability and against the plain, personal look Tantra sends.

FAQ

Can I turn open tracking on? No. Open tracking is not part of Tantra. Engagement is measured by clicks, replies, and unsubscribes.

Will my competitors' open rates make me look worse? Open rates are inflated by image proxies and are not comparable. A reply rate is a far more reliable measure of success.

How do I know if someone read my email? Tantra reports actions, not views. A click or a reply is your signal of interest.

Does leaving out opens really improve deliverability? Removing the hidden tracking image removes a signal that filters use to flag promotional mail, which helps your message reach the inbox.

Where do I see engagement then? On the email analytics screen, through unique clicks, reply rate, and unsubscribes.
